5 stocking filler ideas that won’t cause cavities

Christmas is almost here and many of us will be starting our Christmas shopping…or finishing the shopping, if you’ve already got a head start! The kids’ shopping always takes a bit longer, as usually you have some presents under the tree and smaller ones in their stocking. Traditionally many of these gifts will consist of sweets and chocolates but as dentists we are only too aware of the damage they can do to your little one’s teeth. Therefore here are 5 stocking fillers that won’t cause cavities:

  1. Toothbrushes

Don’t be fooled into thinking that a toothbrush is a boring stocking filler for your little one. There are a wide range of character based brushes, so surprise them with a Frozen or Peppa Pig brush on Christmas morning to see their face light up. Not only will this excite them but it will also encourage them to brush regularly, using their character toothbrush!

  1. Sugar-free sweets

You could go down the more traditional route of sweets as a stocking filler, but why not give them sugar-free ones, which will allow them to indulge without causing too much damage to their teeth, or your teeth, if you plan on stealing a few!

  1. Sugar-free gum

Sugar-free gum is also a great option, and one we recommend is the Peppersmith xylitol gum as this not only reduces harmful bacteria as much as 90%, prevents acid attacks to your teeth and also reduces the bacteria’s ability to stick to your teeth, making the plaque easier to remove!

  1. Nuts

Nuts are a traditional festive snack, plus they contain a good source of calcium, which is essential for the development of your little one’s teeth and bones. Be careful, however, if you buy an unshelled pack, as pieces of shell can chip and crack your teeth. Also, remember to always use a nutcracker and never your teeth to crack open nuts!

  1. Toothbrush timers

A great stocking filler to go with their new toothbrush. This also helps to develop a good oral health routine, plus its fun for them to watch the sand slip through to the other side!s
